Inspect On-Site Septic Systems

On-site septic systems are the most common means of waste treatment in much of the Terrell Creek watershed. When properly designed, installed and maintained these systems can provide years of excellent utility.

However when a system is poorly designed, poorly installed or when maintenance is not completed significant quantities of untreated water is released into adjacent streams, wetlands, ground water and eventually into Birch Bay. Contaminated water from failed septic systems may contain disease causing organisms including bacteria and viruses.

The Whatcom County Health Department requires regular inspection of septic systems: every three years for gravity systems and every year for other systems. The Chums encourage all area residents to complete and report their inspections. This is the best way to ensure that your system is not impacting the clean water in Terrell Creek and Birch Bay.
